So with this broad brush, we end up explaining XIII, Tex Willer, Blueberry, etc... pretty much everything, right?... Have you heard of the concept of "Six degrees of Separation"? At least that came to my mind, reading your point.

There's no drought for points of view, so here's mine:

After the 1945 Europe war (not sure why it *must* be called "World War") , Europe was forced to accept a much more subdued role in the World. European story writers simply reflected this reality into their story lines.

BTW, Nerio was a III generation Yugoslav immigrant BTW and Largo is a I gen immigrant, So the protagonist himself is from Europe's own backyard, no?

  16. This is the 2nd time I am hearing about "Six degrees of Separation" on my blog (See my Avengers review & the comments box!). So with that very broad brush I can also claim America as being Europe's colony because ~70% of its population are European settlers / immigrants right? ;) But if everyone starts relating everything to that theory then no one can express their opinions / views - because at the end of the day one can easily say it is all related :)

And the answer to your question partly lies in your own comment! Europe was forced to accept the reality of being the second fiddle in the new world order - in other words they are heavily influenced by America! So Europe's American Affection is the sincerest form of America's Influence on them! :) :) :) - remember reading this phrase in another form on editor's blog? ;)

anyways thanks for coming up with some alternate thoughts on that generalized comment!

  18. Karthik,
I was merely trying to polish your argument into something more solid in my first comment. Actually, I don't buy into that point of view myself ;-). One reason is, Europeans don't take so kindly to the "forced" subdued role of playing second fiddle to Americans, and they are quite bitter about having to do so.

Personally, I like to think of the reason as something more mundane.... Most swashbuckling adventures, given a choice, like to be set in a place that is "somewhere else" than where its readers will tend to read them. That sense of "foreign" and "exotic" locale gives the story an additional thrill in the readers' minds when they imagine the hero adventuring in unknown lands, unknown seas, etc... So, for this prosaic reason, James Bond travels all the way to some foreign country to engage in "dishum-bishum" with the villain. For this prosaic reason, Italians read about a cowboy in Arizona. For this prosaic reason, Belgians always read their heroes in exotic "other" destinations, for e.g., XIII, Captain Tiger, Tintin! and even Asterix was forever travelling to foreign places!! For this prosaic reason, Sindbad was alwas travelling to some "dangerous island" for his adventures. It kindles the imagination, kindles the fear of the unknown, kindles the joy of living vicariously, etc. Do you see what I mean?

It is good to have had this discussion with you as well.

  19. Actually, the impact of what I say will hit you more if you forget comics for a moment and think in terms of novels... E.g., Think about all of Robert Lois Stevenson's novels: Treasure Island, etc...

Why is their popularity enduring across generations? Because of "travel" and the exotic locales of another land (in another time) involved in the narrations. :-)

  20. not to forget our filmi songs where they simply dream and land in some foreign land just to shake a leg or two :D

and another even more mundane reason could be plain marketing strategy to find a large audience for their comics/novels/films. HQ in New York sounds more global and salable than having it in Brussels! :)

  21. > not to forget our filmi songs where they simply
    > dream and land in some foreign land just to
    > shake a leg or two :D
Ha ha.... +1 for lateral thinking. -1 for film reference. Same equilibrium state! ;-) Ha ha.

As to your second point.... No, I don't agree about the marketing strategy. It is how the swashbuckler genre is set... Marketing or no marketing.

Hence my reference to those Tamil novels as well. And when Sindbad stories was written, there was not even a local market, forget international ones.

Treasure Island (Stevenson), Huck Finn (Twain), Kipling, were written in a time when international marketing was nil, and for the consumption of "homies" ;-).

By default, a successful swashbuckler from those very olde times was set in an exotic land with exotic people... Only the *Hero* character was the one that you, "gentle reader" were allowed to relate to. Modern example: "Largo speaking Tamil" is so much more endearing than those English speech bubble comic scans that I saw recently on the internet ;-)

  22. and in present day scenario, why that "exotic land" always have to be the United States?! :) and for Tamil example you can include many of Goutam Menon's films :D and that's what I tend to call அமெரிக்க மோகம் ;)

  23. > why that "exotic land" always have to be
    > the United States?!

Very good and very valid question...
Personally, I take your side wholeheartedly with regards to blind "அமெரிக்க மோகம்". It is dumb, stupid, foolish, childish, etc. Indeed your Tamil blog is a valiant attempt at using mother tongue for medium of expression over the WWW and needs to be appreciated.

But in case of Largo, because of the "industrialist playboy" plot, the place has to be USA, which is the hot-pot of everything industrial civilisation stands for: naked greed and ambition, cheating, sleaze, profit, etc..... These qualities invariably drive adventures, right ;-)

But if you recall, "Captain Prince and Barney" stories from European writers are set everywhere else, because the story line demands it.
Tintin is also set everywhere else and Herge was particularly scathing and satirical of USA in "Tintin in America", remember? One of my favourite parts in the story is here.... http://sawbonessurio.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/tintin-in-america-pp29.jpg
Martin (marma manithan) is an America based explorer exploring Europe for all his adventures...
Johnny Nero+Stella are always adventuring everywhere except their own "hometown" in London. ;-)

You get the idea, right? It all depends on the setting and the storyline, that's all.

  24. //But if you recall, "Captain Prince and Barney" stories from European writers are set everywhere else, because the story line demands it. //
    agreed :)

    //Tintin//
believe it or not, I never read Tintin / Asterix etc. - like I mentioned in one of my posts - I've always been a தமிழ் காமிக்ஸ் தவளை! and I'm still one ;) I hope I will get out of this comfort zone someday!

and thanks for your appreciation on me writing in Tamil! Yes it does give me a sense of satisfaction writing the posts in Tamil... but I am still in a big dilemma - whether to run the blog in pure tamil and get alienated :D or just go with colloquial tamil added with english words here and there... :)

  25. and I briefly scanned through your blog and I must say all that you have posted out there sounds more like rocket science to me :) I am very poor with money and numbers :) :) :)

  26. >> I never read Tintin / Asterix
I think it doesn't make the slightest difference to one's life or one's well being, if they read Tintin or Asterix, or if they don't. It is just another comic book....

Our Philosophy was beautiful beyond words, it practiced and preached "Be here now"! This teaching is being killed deliberately, and is lost in today's fake "you-centric" narcissism movement. What makes our childhood memories so enjoyable is that we did not "seek things to do". We enjoyed whatever fell on our plates. Fact! This privilege will be lost to our children. They are constantly being "told, cajoled, teased, and ridiculed" about what they *have* to do, what they are missing, what they *must* be doing (நாளைக்கு futureல தேவைப்படும்/தேவைப்படலாம்) by parents, friends, TV, media, newspapers, teachers, businesses, organisations, governments, "friends".....
    http://wulffmorgenthaler.com/img/strip/-WM_strip_2009-04-15.gif
Being satisfied is a threat to consumer/GDP civilisation....

So, if you can only do one thing to your children, teach them to "be here now", and to just enjoy what falls on their plate more thoroughly.... Don't worry this won't rob their ambition, it will make them more focussed.

Sorry if that came like a lecture, it is not.

    >> whether to run the blog in pure Tamil and get alienated
I do not think there is any alienation. I am too stressed and overworked to spend time with transliterate, else I will happily use it and talk to you. While I was guilty of quite a bit of Tanglish in the past, I have used conversationally "pure" Tamil (not in the level of மழித்தல் தகடு, கோட்டை வடி நீர், சாலை (OK, I use that sometimes) or மிதிவண்டி or sanga tamil) for a long time now (despite moving around in pure "English only" professional environments). It will feel fine after a while, and people simply follow your example. Good luck.

Also, if someone took a census of blogs, there will be more as many as a few million blogs! Some people have more than one too. Point is, all blog followings are very niche followings! You already seem to have your own niche following, so "அடி பின்னு"!

My blog's on hiatus. No one wants to hear about what I wish to say.
